I used a spare space in my regular home environment as the setting for this work. Extreme care had been taken to clean this area, with the gathered dust being frozen in ice cube trays. The ice cubes with the dust were returned to the area I had cleaned and rearranged such that their dimensions matched those of the original space. When the ice melts, the dust that was there before is released back into the air. It may seem like this work is just a bunch of useless repetition, but it's actually an exploration of the human need for “meaning,” as if that's what history, civilization, and our own lives are all about. Finding “meaning” is like sweeping up a room: no corner is left untouched. If there’s a weed growing in a crack or a hole in the floor, man will pick it out. They calmly gathered the “dust” and deposited it in a vault full of “meaning,” where it could remain frozen in time. But the ice will thaw with time as well. The “dust” we once saw as an impassable barrier, the “dust” for which we once sacrificed all, will once again be blown about by the wind. Using the most insignificant and unattended dust in the world as a metaphor for the most valued “meaning” that humans spend their entire lives searching for; is there really a difference between the two?
