The laser dot is directed by a hand-crafted mechanism, which in turn moves a wall-mounted cart equipped with a blade and black marker. I have coded the mechanism to guide the laser dot along an erratic course on the wall, but with the restriction that the dot must travel through the wall’s centre point during each movement. The wall can be a metaphor for the passage of time, or the history. Protection is another theme associated with the wall, whether that be individual, private, group, racial, legal, or institutional. It’s also a symbol of division between people, between communities, between ideologies, between classes. Similarly to how our social structure operates, this mechanical device is programmed to control the wall-mounted laser dot in an irregular, unnatural, and directive fashion. The system is established, with the assistance of public authority’s coercive limitations, in which people behave in a haphazard, robotic, and commanded manner. A so-called social “standard” for the current social system, for the individual’s actions and lifestyle, is represented by the laser dot’s predetermined course through the centre of the wall even it seems like its movements are random. Therefore, either a social being has already attained this level of standard or is actively working toward it; and the cart’s unpredictable path of action must take it through the “standard” at the centre of this wall. Here, the cart is guided by a laser dot across a white wall, leaving behind indelible lines that resemble scribbles, cuts, and slashes. As a civilization, we strive to leave our mark on the world, and as a person, we look for ways to cement our place in history and demonstrate our worth by preserving some tangible remnant of our time and effort. Who can see the ink smudges on the wall it grown into a solid black wall? To whom will it be possible to leave traces? The mechanical laser on the cart is constantly cutting and demolishing the wall, and it leaves a trail of knives in its wake. The walls operate as “protectors,” “restrainers,” and “separators,” and individuals, whether upwards or downwards, are continuously attempting to break through these restraints, limits; to break through barriers, obstacles in order to escape protection, control, etc. The carts will continue to follow the laser dots controlled by the device, and the ink and blades on the carts will continue to leave traces long after the walls have been torn to bits or have collapsed. When one runs out of ink, another appears; when one knife blade snaps, another is produced. It never stops –
